Sunday, May 18, at 2 p.m.: National Dulcimer Champs and Friends

Joe Collins, left; Ilace Mears, center; David Wilson, right

This will be a treat for dulcimer fans, along with those who love folk, bluegrass and Celtic music, when these national champions perform with some friends.

Joe Collins has been a folk musician and mountain dulcimer player since the late ’70s. He is a songwriter, vocalist, and an occasional guitarist whose performances are something like a fusion of Burl Ives and Gordon Lightfoot with a mountain dulcimer twist. As the 2007 National Mountain Dulcimer Champion, he is able to combine mountain dulcimer wizardry with good, solid vocals.

Ilace (“Eye-less”) Mears celebrated turning 50 with the purchase of a hammered dulcimer. Since then, the unique and versatile instrument has been a joyful obsession and the portal to a whole new musical world. The journey has led to multiple trophies, including the 2016 National Hammered Dulcimer Champion.

David W. Wilson, 2023 Walnut Valley Festival Mountain Dulcimer Champion, has taught a variety of stringed instruments for thirty-five years in private lessons, music camps and festival workshops. As a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, record producer, instructor and touring musician, David has contributed to nearly 300 folk and acoustic music recordings.
