Springfield Sister Cities and Moxie Cinema partner on Roma film screening to promote “Peace Through People”

Springfield Sister Cities Association is excited to announce its partnership with Moxie Cinema to screen Mexican and Japanese films as another way to promote “Peace Through People.” The first screening is of Roma on Saturday, August 26 at 1pm at Moxie Cinema, 305 S. Campbell Ave., Ste. 101, downtown Springfield.

Roma is a 2018 drama directed by Alfonso Cuarón. It tells the story of a domestic worker’s journey set against domestic and political turmoil in 1970s Mexico. The film won Academy Awards for Best Director, Best Foreign Language Film, and Best Cinematography and was nominated for Best Picture.

Dr. Tim Robbins, professor of Spanish at Drury University, will lead a post-show discussion.

Lisa Bakerink, Springfield Sister Cities executive director, says, “We are excited to team-up with Springfield’s community-supported cinema! Both the Moxie and Sister Cities enrich our community by providing opportunities to engage and learn, so this partnership is a natural fit and a perfect way to begin Springfield’s celebration of its 20th anniversary as sister cities with Tlaquepaque, Mexico!”

The 20th anniversary celebrations will culminate with Taste of Tlaquepaque: Dia de los Muertos on Friday, October 13 at the Gillioz Theatre. Learn more at peacethroughpeople.org/taste.

In addition to Springfield’s 20-year sister city relationship with Tlaquepaque, Mexico, Springfield has been sister cities with Isesaki, Japan since 1986. Springfield Sister Cities Association and Moxie Cinema look forward to partnering on additional screenings of Japanese and Mexican films in 2024.

Parking at Moxie Cinema is conveniently located in the College Station parking garage which has more than 400 free, covered parking spaces and is attached to the cinema. You can also find street parking on both McDaniel and Campbell.

Roma tickets are $7 and are available at the Moxie or on their website at moxiecinema.com. Sister Cities members can show their membership card to receive a free small popcorn.
